XP Profiles issue

Postby dravenUk » Mon Dec 10, 2012 2:49 pm

Hi guys. I'm trying to fix a PC for a friend. This PC was virus'd to hell and back, programs taking ages to start, or simply not starting and Xp itself not always wanting to boot. Got a repair done via an XP disc that got stability to the system then managed to clean out a ton of malware and some nasty viral problems (pulled the drive out, slaved it to my other PC and ran the scans from there). With the drive back in the original PC Windows now loads smoothly and there are no viral or malware warnings. However, the original profiles no longer show up on the usual profile select screen (PC loads straight to desktop with an admin profile). If I run compmgmt.msc I can see all the profiles under the users and groups section but they don't show up during boot up. I also appear to have a Windows.0 directory as well as the Windows one - is it booting from the .0 and that's why the profiles don't show - how do I change that?

Thanks in advance

Hi

This PC was virus'd to hell and back,

I doubt that an AV alone would get rid of all incidences of the malware.

You need to have your system checked out by a malware removal expert.

I am not qualified to help with this but if you d/l MBAM - update it and run it it will produce a log.
Copy this and post it here.

You want the free version.
You may get re-directed to a mirror site - this is OK.

An OTL log may help too:
There is an explanation of what to do here:

With this information the malware guys here should be able to advise further.

Note to Mods:
I hope the link to KpcH is ok?
If not -please remove it :)

How was the repair done?
This could be where the problem is coming from depending on the "repair" and how it was done.

It could also be that your NTUser.dat file is corrupted or damaged.
Are the all users folders listed when you browse to the C:\Documents and Settings folder?
