Stopped at desktop

Postby Torquay-Pete » Mon Dec 31, 2012 12:51 pm

Hi all, having a problem with startups....PC is hanging just after the welcome screen has vanished. This started yesterday, I have not installed any new hardware or software, Tried a checkdisk this found no problems, system restore is worse than hopeless.PC will start in safe mode but as soon as I reboot the same ole thing happens, fed up I did are-install of windows. This seemed to cure it....but after downloading the updates this started to hang again ?, I am at a loss now any suggestions would be more than welcome...cheers as always Pete

Torquay-Pete,

Download DDS from the following location:
DDS Tool Download Link

When you click on the above link you will see be brought to a download page. Please click on the Download Now button

Click on the Save button. You will now be presented with a screen asking where you would like to save the file.
Click once on the Desktop button, designated by the red arrow in the figure above, to save the file to your Desktop and then press the Save button. Your computer will now download the file to your computer and save it on your Desktop.

Disable any script-blocking programs and then double-click on the DDS.com icon to start the program. If you did not disable a script-blocker that may be part of your antimalware program, you may receive a warning from your antimalware product asking if you would like DDS.com to run. Please allow it to do so.

Once you double-click the icon a Windows security warning may also appear asking if you are sure you would like to run the program.

Click on the Run button to start DDS.
DDS will now display a small black window providing information as to what DDS is doing on your computer

When DDS has finished scanning, all of this information will be compiled and be displayed in two Notepad windows named dds.txt and attach.txt

You will then be shown a small box giving instructions as to what you should do with these files. Feel free to close this message box by pressing the OK button.

We now need to save the two log files that were created. First click on the DDS.txt window and click on the File menu and then select Save As... menu option.

Post the DDS logs in your reply.

Torquay-Pete,

Please download combofix to your desktop.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

If combofix will not start or is ended before the "Blue window" please rename combofix.exe to cbf.exe and try again.

If cbf.exe will not start or is ended, you will have to run cbf.exe from safe mode.
Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Do not exit Combofix while it is running you my loose all your personal settings!
Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running, that may cause it to stall.

When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Hi Gecko, thanks for all of your help but I think I found the answer to this problem. I did a system restore back to the new install of windows ( which this wouldnt do an hour previous !!) then remembered that Malwarebytes had recently updated which it does frequently, however this update had a changed logo which at the time I thought nothing about. I did a google search about malwarebytes freezing PC and lo and behold dozens of people were having the same problems. To cut a long story short I installed my anti-virus, Threatfire etc and updated windows 7 and so far this has fired up without a hitch for the last 12 times, so I am assuming that the new Malwarebytes IS causing my trouble, keeping my fingers crossed that this is now sorted ......if the prob comes back then I will try the combofix idea. Thanks again Mate :cheerleader: I hope this helps others who are in the same boat. Keep up the good work...Pete
