Black screen and crash

Postby joolsd » Thu Jun 11, 2015 8:47 pm

Dear all,

I signed up today, as I am finding these crashed very frequent, and it is difficult to identify the cause.

Let me first tell you what happens.

I start the computer, and it goes to the log-in in page. I have a user account with restricted permissions, for every day surfing, or where I am not using games or software. I don't think this is important but I'd say anyway. This also happens in the main admin account, with full permissions.

Sometimes the black screen issue will happen the moment I log in, sometimes it will happen after 10 minuets. What is interesting is that the freeze will happen oncs or twice in a short space of time, then after that I can leave the PC on all day and it won't happen again, unless I restart. Sometime the PC recovers and other times it completely shuts down.

I use a Nivida GTX480, and soon after the crash I get a message something like , ' The display module failed and recovered'. I will try and screen grab it the next time it happens.

I have tried many different drivers for my graphics card, after doing a driver sweep. With no luck.

I am starting to wondered if there is a hardware error, on the graphics hardware, the network card or even the mother board.

I have attached the crash report, but I am not sure what it all means. If anybody could give me a few pointers, as to what is causing the crash I would appreciate it?

If it is a hardware error, I can maybe get it fixed. If it is a software or driver conflict I can take action accordingly.

Best regards

Julian

joolsd,

Let's see what the Event Viewer has to say about the error you are getting.

Go to Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event viewer >
Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

You want to look in the system section.

You are looking for any red icons, double click on the icon.
Click inside the 'Description' section then highlight the text and copy and paste it into notepad.
At the bottom of the event window check 'words' and then copy and paste that text also
Then past it all into your reply to this thread.

Thanks for the reply Gecko.

Well I found that error, and not surprising this is implying that it is the graphics display.
So is this the only cause of the problem?

I have tried re-installing the drivers, as well as different drivers?
Let me know if you see anything else?

joolsd,

This is a know issue and Microsoft has a fix for it.

Go to the following MS page and click on the Fix It button
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2665946

This fix adjusts the Timeout Detection and Recovery registry value giving more time to complete this operation by adjusting the registry value.

I backed up the reg, and used the 'Fix it for me' option.

Thank you for your help. I might need to try using my PC for a bit, as the symptoms are a bit sporadic. And happen when you are not expecting it.

The problem is still there.

I guess I could do the fix manually...

I tried to manually do the fix and still the problem persist. I also set the visual effects to performance. And still no joy.

I found that the 'fix it for me' didn't instal the registry keys as it said it would.

joolsd,

If changing the Timeout Detection and Recovery registry value didn't fix the problem then this just might be a hardware issue.
Have you check the fan on the video card to make sure it's spinning when the system is on?

The fan is always on, in fact it makes a great deal of noise.

It could well be a hardware error. Maybe a trip to the PC shop might me the best option.

Best regards'

Is there anyway of finding out where the hardware error is? It is crashing almost every time I start windows. The error messages are intelligible, and do not say much?

This sounds like it could be a over heating issue, when was the last time you cleaned the inside of the computer like the CPU and GPU heat-sinks and fans ?

I have taken a bit off memory out and it hasn't crashed in the same way yet.
