Whats up with this?

During the past three months I have been doing a lot of dial up connections. There were days that I no sooner connected and there was a security alert on my pc. I looked in the log files found out who it was and sent abuse reports. The next thing I got was an e-mail from my server saying because it was not from a sympatico account there was nothing they could do.

Being the curious guy I am I decided each time I got these Ripper Trojan attacks I would look to see what my IP address was. After doing this for about 6 weeks I found out an interesting fact. Every time I checked I found all the IP's started with 216.209.114 and then it didnt matter what the last two or three digits were I got hit with a Ripper Trojan.

I later contacted the server and told them some one has taken over these IP perameters and are computer generating scans. This morning when I connected I had 62 Ripper Trojan attempts between 7:30 and 8:00. Their response was there was nothing they could do to stop this from happening and if people didnt have anti virus protection that was their fault. Then believe it or not the service technician tried to sell me some anti virus protection.

Now am I wrong in thinking that a server should be interested in knowing some one has hijacked a complete set of IP addresses? To me they are being irresponsible and and not froviding a quality server product. Sympatico is probably the biggest server in Canada and they dont care about the customer what so ever.

I have tried to find a program that hides an IP address but I guess I havent looked hard enough. I thought if I put this post in the forum not only would people read it but I should save it on my pc and send it to sympatico and let them see their irresponsibility is being spread around the internet. Let them sue me, I have about enough to buy a can of beans and some bread. Daniel

You normally don't need a firewall on a dial up connection but it certainly does not hurt and in your case it may be the answer to your problem. I recommend downloading the free version of ZoneAlarm and giving it a try.

Sounds like a bored individual is just scanning your IPS's net block.Its not illegal to scan and there is nothing your ISP can do about it.The good news is your probably dealing with an amature,playing with a new found "toy".
