Desktop Display Problem - Help Please!

An old man called me today because he accidentally clicked something and his desktop turned into a white screen with some folder options. I was able to show some of his desktop, but on the left side of the screen there are still folders being displayed that will not go away. Does anyone know how to get rid of this white rectangle on the left side of the screen? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He is running XP Home on the classic layout theme. The computer is a piece of junk, but he is old and doesn't care.

lol this is a first for me, never knew that was possible. Now i have to go play with a xp box and see how the hell that happened.
