I have ben having seies of probs. preping a PC to be used by the kids of a friend.First :cd drives (cd/rw and dvd player) were nt seen by bios/boot many-many solutions explored,after reinstall of 98' (not se) ,reinstall of via 4in1 drivers for MB,now have drives (all) seen on boot.Must mention,this is a hdd replacement,and the install of win98' "from an UPGRADE" CD,yes i know,but it has worked sucessfully in the past.Current prob :The pc will boot;play DVD'S ,music CD'S connect to internet and record cdr/w disks,,,,,,,,,,,,, until the PC is physically moved!!trying (3 attempts now!) to take a "properly working PC" on auto trip to next town,to set up for the kids,,,if fails to boot to desktop 22 of 25 boots!sopme times able to get to "safe mode" which has failed (or i failed knowing what to do there" ,boot on "bootdisk" will seldom boot to desktoip unless after many many attempts,then hang at desktop trying to run scandisk.leave set for hour/hours or overnight it "wants" to boot to os,tried reinstall 98' it failed twice,then after 3rd it asked for an mci type file,which i could not get "setup to see" on setup cd.also it wanted a "stream" type file same result,i could not properly locate it or it "refused to see it".MOVED IT BACK HOME AGAIN!let set overnight,it booted to dos screnn sedom seen in other boot attempts,overing the choice to 1.normal boot 2. safe mode etc. I have chosen safe mode--- now can someone advise,,, i loaded all pertinent mOBO. drivers from a cd from someone who had once owned same MOBO,not original driver disc but faithfull copy.I dont believe the PC DOES NOT LIKE TO TRAVEL

,BUT AFTER longer "sitting periods" it boots much more sucessfully, my guess? config files not correct?OH YES! on many boot tries ---nonsystem boot disk please insert sys disk hit enter-somes times did not find hard disk,,hope i have given you enough to not confuse you too! thanks too all! Phazer

It shouldnt matter where you move your pc, you obviously have other major issues. What are you upgrading when you use your upgrade disk? ? ? You have to have an O.S. on there first to upgrade it. I strongly suggest a proper full installation of OEM 98 disc after fdisk. And proper drivers for your mobo.

I have actually loded os 98' to the new HDD useing only the "upgrade" cd,,yes i know it maybe should not be "possible" but,the PC does run win98 ,on install the setup cd asks for proof of ownership of prior ms product,have sucessfully used a dos 6.2 setup diskette and a win95 setup diskette to ,get "permission" to install from the upgrade cd.Performed thisinstall on my main PC,and it has been running for 5 months so far ,runs all applications.I am jesting about "moveing the PC",IT'S JUST THAT AFTER I TAKE IT ON A TRIP TO DELIVER IT TO THE KIDS ,IT DOES NOT BOOT : ). aND AFTER "SITTING PAITENTLY" for a long period without moveing it ,seems to produce a better chance of a good boot-up.

I agree with Geekgirl that you should get a full version and so a clean install of 98se.First Edition 98 is very "buggy",hence the release of Second Edition.You need to check all your connections/cables.Perhaps reseating any cards (sound/video/ram) could help.What im getting at is it sounds more like a loose connection somewhere which is causing problems after moving it around.Also make sure that the jumpers on the back of all your drives are set correctly.

You cannot use a Win98-UPGRADE CD on a clean HDD!
A lot of the files needed are in the OLD OS that the Win98Upgrade cd will almagate with.

As the CD says----> Win98 Upgrade CD
This CD is for a pc that has a Win95 Operating System already installed.

Do as GeekGirl says and FDISK>REFORMAT

Then install the OEM CD for Win98SE(Second Edition)
