Assistance needed to remove .VXD file

Good morning! I gave my dad my older Win98 machine and cleaned alot of old programs off the drive to free up some space for him. One of the programs was Freetel... and now on boot up Win98 wants the two freetel.vxd files.

A few years ago I had the same trouble with another machine and found the instructions on how to remove any instances of these files but my notes are long gone.

I'd appreciate any help with this.

Many thanks,

Helen

They probably exist in either win.ini, system.ini or in the registry. In the first 2 cases load the files up in notepad & search for the vxd names. In the latter, run regedit & search for the filenames.

Thank you... :)

Thanks very much for the response, Restek! I hope they are in the registry because I don't know how to "load the files up in notepad" to do a search. (I'm not very savvy about this stuff!)

Again... many thanks! :)

If you don't know what you're doing, then feel free to post here before you delete anything - we should be able to tell you whether you've found the correct entry :)

Files removed...

Restek,

I found the two rogue files in the system.ini window... and I put "rem" before the "device=C:\Freetel\freetel1.vxd" and again for \freetel2.vxd. After the reboot, Win98 was not asking for the files anymore and everything seems fine now. I hope it was the right thing to do.

You guys are the best! I've used this forum once before for a problem in XP and you had things figured out within the hour!

Thank you all so very much! :)
