I don't think Window Washer had anything to do with your problem. I have had Window Washer for a long time now and have not had any problems with it. I would suggest that you restore your registry to point to just before you developed the problem to see if that corrects the problem.

I just ran into that problem... the machine had 4 Trojans' and adware all over it. Unfortunaltely the Trojans corrupted the registry but I did manage the use of the control panel and icons again. Scan your H.D.D.

You getting anywhere?

Well, I am in the fortunate position of only being able to open most files through the run command on start menu. On the desktop, IE and Outlook seem to be alright as well as my computer, but the rest of the programs have this general MS icon. When I try to open them I get the 'open with' box....so it is not liking it.

As for Control Panel, 'access is denied', again unless I open the cpl file via 'Run'.

Another thing that worries me is the presence of two networks on Zonealarm when I am just a home user, and sure, I have my normal dial-up one, but the other????

I felt compelled to downloading McAfee for a couple off weeks, and I managed to bin PWS-IN and W32/SDBot....but still no joy opening files. ..and as for NAV, well I couldn't even get it to install properly! I have reinstalled critical updates which seemed to have been wiped out, and I decided to do a Scandisk last night sa suggested by Ms Geek above. It nigh on killed my computer as it went to a DOS screen and said there were errors on the drive it couldn't fix. Hell, it couldn't even loca C:.

A nice cup of tea later, it scanned ok, and I can get Windows back up, but still.....hmmm......I need to call on an expert for this I think.

Anyway, if you can help me resurrect this....you will be in my heart.....

Thanking you in advance... If there is anything I can do, please shout....

When I said scan your H.D.D. I meant with an anti virus program. You mentioned you scanned with McAfee then you mentioned something bout Norton. Which do you have installed? They will conflict with eachother if you have 2 diff anti virus programs installed or at least thats the knowledge I have. When did this start happening, have you installed any new programs? I fixed simular problem after removing Trojans and adware as I stated before. You also said you have no access to desktop icons, then you said you can use comp/doc icons. Are you able to open anything on the desktop by just double clicking? Reply with more info plz.

Well, I can open Internet Explorer, My Computer, Outlook I guess (though I haven't done so yet) the Recycle bin and my jpegs 'in an Explorer window, but that is about it. Everything else has the general white icon with the MSWindow in in it. My Control Panel has now started to behave a little better thanks to some advice about dowloading My Cleaner, but still, I cannot open them unless through 'Run'. All I get is the 'Open With' screen coming up, looking for a suitable application to open RUNDLL32.Exe......which of course proves ultimately circular as it says I need to open everything with something...again, unless I use the Run command. ..and yes, maybe that's why NAV didn't work cos I had McAfee going? ..or did I have it turned off? I can't remember. Either way, I'm not sure I have some virus/trojan in there - more that I am missing some essential files now????
