just a daft thing really...hehe

my work colleague has recently bought a comp and was told by the man who installed to NEVER switch her power sockets off....as in never unplug her comp even if she's not using it.

just wondering if i'm missing something ??!! i always turn my sockets off when i shut down and my pc works perfectly well and has done for over a year

tis a woman thing to want to switch sockets off at night i spose !!

just wondering in there is any substance to what he said ??

He might mean: "while the computer is running".
It's always best to shutdown Windows before unplugging or turning off the wall socket.

cos she sed to me...do u turn your computer off at the plug? n i sed yup ! and she sed nooooooo u don't wanna b doin that etc etc

I'm sure she sed that he sed (lol) that there was sumethin that needed constant power?

i turn my comp off completely 3 to 6 times a day without a problem for years now

you can also look at it as a test for powring up.....

it makes NO DIFFERENCE if you leave your computer still plugged in, unplug it, or turn it off at a power strip switch, AS LONG AS YOU USE THE SHUTDOWN COMMAND FIRST.

I wonder if the person might have been speaking about a surge protector. I believe a lot of the newer surge protectors work better if they are powered up while they might not work at all if they are powered down.

its a new comp my friend has got so it's likely to have sumething like that...whereas ive got a basic no frills set up so i didnt kno wot she meant and she didnt have the knowledge to explain it to me

Of course the best surge protector in the world is to completely unplug the PC from all power sources and outside access such as phone lines and cable jacks. I learned this the hard way last summer when my PC was hit by lighting via the modem through the phone line. I did not remember I had the modem connected since I had converted to cable access and bang one roasted PC.

it's just tooooo hard to shutdown tho sumetimes lol....electric storm or not lol.... we dont get many in the U.K...but i always just think....well if it gets nearer i'll shut down lol.... guess i will learn my lesson the hard way lolz
