On a laptop I have it goes directly to a prompt after powering up and says:
The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\Windows\System\VMM32.VXD
Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g. above file)

What do I do to get this thing booted. I'm going to try a boot disk but if that doesn't work what should I do?

At the command prompt, type:
dir vmm32.vxd /s

If the Vmm32.vxd file is not found, you must install Windows 95 or Windows 98 again. If the Vmm32.vxd file is found, note the folder in which it is located, and then continue with step 2.

At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command
cd windows
ren folder system

where folder is the folder you noted in step 1.

Restart your computer.

I have used the recovery disk to maybe get it back up but it stops at about 74% because it has encountered an unrecoverable error. After doing the recovery I tried booting without the disk in it and it will ask which mode to go into and any one that you go into the screen will flash a couple oftimes and the say it is safe to turn your computer off and turn off. I have talked to some people and they have said it is the hard drive causing these problems. Is this my problem?

I have gotten it to work but does the hard drive screw things up like that?
