Urgent help needed please

The cd rom on my dads pc wont regonise any disks at all when i check device manager its got a discrepency under PCI COMMUNICATION DEVICE its says the driver is not installed but when i try to download driver automatically it wont let me

Hi clennonuk,
Highlight the PCI COMMUNICATION DEVICE and remove. Then reboot. You may need your OEM disc.
The operating system will reconize it again and you will be able to install from there.

I have removed pci com device and rebooted and it does try to install again but being a penis i havent got a oem disk is there any other way around it

Browse your PC for something with cab files in it. When I used to set up Win9X pcs I would put it in Windows-->Options-->Cabs. That would be where to find it. But you may have a directory called OEM. Check and see.

Hey clennonuk,
Try directing it to the C:\Windows\System folder. Or search for a folder called PRECOPY and direct it there.
We may need to look for drivers for the motherboard also.

Hey there. You know I have heard of similar problems and it might be a registry key. When 2 programs conflict with one another, that can happen. Make sure ya check that to.
But WAIT FOR SOMEONE WITH ALOT OF HOURS AS A PC TECH to help you edit your registry if need be. I have done it, and I know how, but I don't want to say because someone might hold it against me lol. ttyl

When the box pops up and asks for the Location of the file...
Click the BROWSE button and find these to see if its there..
C:\Windows\System folder
C:\Windows PRECOPY <<<could be in another folder(might not be there at all)

is this prob i have the cause of my cdrom not reading any disks

No I dont think so. Perhaps its because you dont have the files on your PC. Do you have a friend who owns an original Win98 CD?
