Try booting into safe mode.

Turn the computer on and tap the f5 key until you get the windows splash screen.

See if you have folders and icons at that point in safe mode.

Are you running a currently updated virus program? if so run it from safe mode

If that works, go to start---> run and type in msconfig and hit enter

disable everything that starts up and reboot and see if the system responds.

If it does, go back to msconfig and enable 1/2 of the items and reboot. If it fails, you'll know the issue is with and item in that group. Undo what you did in safe mode and enable the other half. then go back and enable 1/2 of whats left. In about 4 boots, you should have it pin pointed.

If that doesn't work and you have checked for viruses and found none, I would hope that maybe its a registry snafu.

reboot and this time hit the f8 key until you get a menu. I can't remember which number it is, but pick DOS Prompt

At the prompt, type in SCANREG /RESTORE there is a space between the G /.

You will see 4 restore points, 5 if you scroll down. Highlite a date that you know that the machine was doing AOK. Select it and hit enter. This will restore your registry to that date. It could fail, if it does pick one of the others

Hope this helps
