No Internet connection

Hiyall Heres one for ya, I have 2 hard drives 80 gig for my C drive and 160 gig I use for storage. I decided to download the latest Vista from Microsoft to try this out, I put this on my storage disc ( not wanting to possibly screw up my happily running set up). So far so good.
I tried everything I could with this but could not get online at all?? The connection was there the icon in the system tray was beaming away at me saying everything was fine, I tried to repair the connection with the new Vista Wizard but it wasn`t having any of it. I put this down to a bug in the program got pi**ed off with it and re-formatted the disc. i then thought about putting XP Home on here and upgrading to vista to see if this would keep the internet setting from here (still with me?) Guess what, I Cant even get an internet connection on XP home?? even though I am using the same Modem?? any ideas? the Wizard says that the internet connection should be fine and I should contact my ISP.
This seems strange to me I am at a loss here (Shame coz Vista looks like it cold be a good system). Heres hoping that someone out there can sort this strange problem out. Thanx as always Pete

Let's see if we can get you going
Open a command box (Start > Run > type cmd > ok) and type:
ipconfig /all (note the space between Ipconfig and /all) and press enter.

To copy in a command box right click inside the box and select "Mark"
Now drag the mouse over the text and press enter, now you can paste it into notepad.

Still in the command box next type:
ping 209.73.186.238 (note the space between ping and 209) and press enter
(that ip is for yahoo I'm trying to see if it's a dns problem)

Post the results of both commands into this thread.
(just post the first set of number for your ip no need to show everyone)


All the security settings in Vista are a nightmare, I have it installed on a separate drive.
I connect up the vista drive and disconnect the XP drive I'm taking no chances it's only rc1 one step from beta.
That's all on a backup system not the one I use daily.

hi Gecko thanx for your help, but I have decided that life`s too short to spend any more time on this so I reformatted the storage drive so I can go back to using this just for DVd`s and the like.The only problem now is that when I boot up I get a "Invalid Boot.ini" message before this boots up from my C drive??

Boot from the Windows Vista dvd, at the install screen select repair
Once you are at the at the command prompt type:
E:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force
(where E is you dvd drive)

Will this get me back to a normal boot from the C:/drive? bearing in mind that I have Removed Vista and reformatted the D:/ Drive that Vista was installed on???

Hello again Gecko I have managed to work out for myself how to edit the Boot.ini and now my system is running sweet as a nut again I think I will wait for the official release of Vista before I go down that road again!!!
