WINPUP32 gets me 404 new spies in 22 seconds of connectivity

Postby CanadianTek » Wed Jul 21, 2004 3:24 pm

This one has been a real challenge..

Started with 3706 copies of sasser B.. all gone now..
Stripped away.. 418 copies of HiDrag.A - with some resultant file damage
could only remove 417 copies.. had to manually delete the file called

c:\windows\uninst.exe by the install sheild corporation.. as it could not be healed or moved to the virus vault..

Also had a couple trojan's .. downloaders.. etc.. cleaned..

Ran Spybot.. 262 spies.. cleaned all but 6

Got this message in Spybot 1.3 Error During Check! Winpup32 [Ungultiger datentyp fur"]
+ 5 DSO exploits..

i say fix problems.. it says it does..

i reboot.. whoooosh.. they are back..

i repeat the procedure in safe... mode.. - same thing..

i connected to the net for 23 seconds to grab the lastest Spybot updates..

GOT 404 new spies... in 22 seconds during simultaneous download of the update, physically disconnected as soon as download of patch was finished..

now just back down to the winpup32 and 5 dso's

NOW.. i downloaded some winpup instructions.. -from kephyr? single page.. thought i had it licked.. it all came back...

went to a different site.. had 5 more pages of instructions.. including the subtle little nuance about.. how the first letter is dropped of the front of the file.. and attached to the back end..

example.. console.exe would become onsolec.exe

after pouring over the folders and sub-folders.. i cannot find any mispelled files.. that i might have missed.. and the list i got.. was pretty extensive.. AND there is nothing.. that i can see sitting in

hklm software\microsoft\current version \ run =a default and AVG those are the only 2 entries there..

Ref:

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

netclnt.exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)

[b]Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\netclnt.exe

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" / Reboot and post a fresh HJT Log File.
