XP SP2 system.. loses IE connectivity over time..

Postby CanadianTek » Tue Dec 28, 2004 8:08 am

far tooo much detail to go into here..

but it started out being anything other then a routine HJT situation..

modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=22608#22608

is the link to the Win XP Forum.. where i started this journey.. several days ago..

summarizing, i've removed wake on lan features from integrated nic, ive shut off apm, ive removed a suspicious screen saver, added spysweeper and registry mechanic to remove anything ... Bazooka, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, AVG Free 7, and Zone Alarm - may have missed.. - found a few problems, a handful of traces.. but all now seems to be ok in spy dept... or so i thought..

i have also..., switched cables.. on router, plugging my laptop into "suspicious" pinched cable.. all was fine.. switched ports on the router.. all was still fine..

I have disabled the old mobo nic, and installed a new pci dlink 530 tx. and drivers..

still .. after 4 or 5 hours of non-use.. - it does not allow us surf the net using MS IE, (nor when using Mozilla's Firefox) - however.. it did allow us to msn chat, yahoo chat (althought that took 3 or 4 times longer to login and authenticate over msn chat/messenger 6.2) - icq worked fine... so it left me scratching my head..

here is the hjt report..

im suspicious of a few lines..

but.. - please .. any feedback would be greatly appreciated..

i have advised my friend.. that .. im not a big fan of panic ware's pop-up blocker..

they have been using it for the longest of times.. but.. somehow also have that extra added use of googles blocker..

they have been using spyware guard for a while.. but now that spysweeper is installed.. and it has resident home page hijack blocking.. feature.. again not sure if that is over kill ..

as for my suspicions.. that line o17 at the end.. is one of them.. but please crrect me if i am wrong..

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

(If you do not know this entry delete it.)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us6.hpwis.com/

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us6.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://channels.aimtoday.com/search/aimtoolbar.jsp
O8 - Extra context menu item: &AIM Search - res://C:\Program Files\AIM Toolbar\AIMBar.dll/aimsearch.htm

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.
