Looks like you picked up a new one - mszx23.exe !!

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following: (They may or may not be there)

mszx23.exe !!
winupdate07294943[1].exe

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [secboot] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mszx23.exe !!
O4 - Startup: winupdate07294943[1].exe

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

*killbox may also be required to remove these
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mszx23.exe !!
C:\Document and Settings\PC1\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winupdate07294943[1].exe

Go to C:\Windows\prefetch
and remove everything from inside the folder

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" .

Update and run Spybot, it should catch and remove the dll's associated with this, then reboot.

*Side note
mszx23.exe is a very nasty trojan and will possibly come back. Once you've done the above, post a new log amd we'll see if it done any good. Its very likely that we will find a renamed version.

yup, it kept coming back, and coming back, and coming back. Here's what i ended up doing. Using regedit, removed HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogin\Notify\drct16. Had problems deleting with killbox, and in safe mode, so entered repair mode through boot cd. deleted several files associated with the virus, all in the C:\windows\system32 folder they were;
mszx23.exe
drct16.dll
p2.ini
klo5.sys
klogini.dll
i.a3d
redir.a3d
vdmt16.sys
ps.a3d
dload.exe
tmpf00.exe
It was rumored out there that the file names may differ, but this is what i found. Exited repair mode and rebooted. Now IE and outlook express work, as does Norton liveupdate. No apparent lagging problems. Here's a new logfile if you'd please look it over.
