Need Help with System

I am not sure I am understanding - my boot sequence is set in the BIOS as follows:
CD/DVD
Floppy
I: Drive
C: Drive

So you are saying even though I have the boot sequence to go to I: first, it is still booting off of C: ??

When I installed the drive, the system gave it designation of I: since other drives were installed. I then loaded XP, the changed boot sequence.
My plan was to pull the C: drive when I get all of the data moved over.
But if it will not boot, I am stuck with the problems that I have, and don't see that I would be able to correct it.

What I mean by boot drive is that your C: drive contains the MBR (master boot record) and it’s the first sector of your C drive that basically tells the BIOS where to look for the operating system on your computer. Typically, the MBR resides on the first sector of the first hard disk found, in your case that would be your C drive.

OK I was apparently having a senior moment when I gave you the sequence of events to install the new dirve. We did disconnect the C: drive when we loaded the operating system to the I: drive. It is disconnected now and I did so to see if it would boot up. It did boot up OK and it is running about the same as it was when it was connected. I haven't had it on long enough to tell if it will hang up or not.
Have I possibly gotten everything from this one I can, is it maybe just too old to revive? I have replaced disk drive, and video card recently, memory seemed to check out OK, and I don't know if there is anything else i can check to see if there is a problem. I am really not wanting to replace the whold system now, but if that is all that is left, is that the next step?

Glad to know that it boots without C drive connected, that is a real good thing.

No a new system would be a vary last resort, there would be other things we could do first like a reinstall or a repair install.

While your C drive is disconnected try running the ESET scan again but before you do please delete the log found here:
I:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt.

If it finishes please port the log

Finished the ESET scan and the following is the log.txt file - it strikes me as ironic that the first file found and flagged as a threat was speedupmypc.exe. All of the others it found were quarantined already.

Well it did find one active infection, so how's it running now?

It is running better, most of the time it performs about as I would expect. It does however occassionally just lock up and I have to do a power off to reboot. Usually this has been when I was using IE, but this morning it locked up while I was replying to an email. It just quit mid sentence. Every running application shown in task manager was showing as not responding. After rebooting, it seem to be running well again. The only applications open were Outlook, the original email, and the reply window. I wouldn't think that should overload the system. It also hung up last night while I was working on a web site, but I had IE open with the website, Outlook which I usually leave open all the time, Dreamweaver, the web site administrative control panel, all open and running. It hung up when I was editing a page, actually lost the page I was working on and had to restore it after the reboot. I can live with some occassional hang ups, even though the are irrating, as long as they don't happen as frequently as they were before. If there are any more tests I can do to try and track it down, I will be more than willing to do them, but let me know when we have exausted all of the possibilities and I can live with what I have. We can try running windows system file checker to see if you have any corrupted or changed system files, you will need your Windows XP install cd for any file replacement that may be needed.

Put the Windows XP install CD in the CD/DVD drive.
Next click Start and select Run, then type in the following into the field.
CMD
now press enter
In the command windows type the following;
sfc /scannow (note the space between the C and the /)
Now press enter,
System file checker will now check you system files and replace any corrupted or changed files accordingly.

Once SFC is finished reboot the system and see if that helps with the lockups.

That's about it for any operating system related items that could be causing the lockups, short of a reinstall anyway.

It could be a hardware problem, I've seen some strange thing over the years. Like a system that would just freeze up for no reason, turned out to be a bad sound card in the end. Most often hardware failure is RAM, Power Supply and hard drive in that order. Sometimes it comes down to trial and error, removing one item at a time, test for resolution, repeat until bad device found.

Well I finally got some time to run the SFC scan, re-booted and have had a few hangups but not as many as I was getting before. However it is now running slower again. It seems to take longer to load a page, but once it is loaded, it seems to run ok. It seem to take a long time to locate proxy server, or contact it or whatever it does with a proxy server. Videos will run jerky, and audio stutters or breaks up. I am thinking of pulling the audio card to see if that makes any difference. I have already replaced the power supply, disk drive, and video card. Only hardware left to replace is audio card and mother board. At least I think that is all left. Also I have not done windows update since I ran SFC, unless it is automatically running, I think it is schedule to run each night, I will need to see if it has run or not. I did run the virus scans after running SFC and all it found were the already quarantined files.

I guess I am just showing my age now. I pulled off the cover and found that there is not an audio card on the computer. I am told it is now a chip on the motherboard. So much for that idea. I did get a processor diagnostics from Intel, ran it and it found no problems. So if the problem is hardware, it is intermittent, and will probasbly never show up on tests. I am not making light of health issues, but it is like this machine has alzheimiers. I can open the browser, or any of several other programs, and it will just stop, like it is saying, "what was I doing?". I have waited it out a few times, it may take up to 5 minuets or so, then it will just continue like nothing every happened. Sometimes the short term memory is just not there. We have exausted the virus possibilities, and now the hardware possibilities, and I am guessing I will just have to accept how it runs now. I can see a new computer in my future, sooner than I wanted to. I really don't see any need to reload the operating system, since I did the install on this drive recently, and we have done the SFC scan which was to replace any corrupted file. I appreciate you dedication to trying to resolve my problems, but I guess it is time to give in and let it know it has won.

My computer keeps blue screening, and the lag is ridiculous when I am watching videos or gaming. My internet is above average so I know its not that....what can I do to speed up the lag and make my gaming more enjoyable?
