browser hijacked strange popup

My Dad's computer ended up being defiled somehow, by him, and I need some help with the hijackthis! log. He has norton fully updated, adaware fully updated, and spybot. cleaned up all artifacts found by those three, but a file named c:\windows\system32\dload.exe which norton recognizes as dialer.tibs. Norton fails to delete this file even in safe mode. In addition, when starting up the computer, a message box pops up stating "Is your computer infect with spyware?" and has yes/no buttons. Since it is not even proper english, I am guessing that it's a bad thing. here's his log file.

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = C:\WINDOWS\blank.htm
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B72F75B8-93F3-429D-B13E-660B206D897A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\snim.dll

O18 - Filter: text/plain - {B72F75B8-93F3-429D-B13E-660B206D897A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\snim.dll
O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

If this Domain (204.96.101.1) does not belong to your ISP, or your firms network, these entries should be fixed.
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{11B892AD-7A3F-4726-A222-7B9AC65F42DF}: NameServer = 204.96.101.1 204.96.101.2

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.

Any problem with me manually deleting C:\windows\system32\dload.exe? I wouldn't imagine so, but as norton failed to delete it, I wondered if it served a purpose.

great, that worked fine for the instances of snim.dll, but now neither IE nor outlook will open. Upon attempting to open, I recieve an error message that states IE experienced an error and needs to close, and the whole "Send microsoft an error report" process opens. No other problems though. Hijack log is the same as before, less the lines i fixed. :|

Try running Norton AV again
I think you might have a version of the

It's these two entries that make me suspicious
but don’t delete them yet let’s see what Norton comes up with first
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Shell] open32.exe
O4 - Startup: winupdate07294943[1].exe

Download KillBox.zip from here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/s ... illBox.zip
Place it in a folder on your Desktop.

Extract KillBox from the zip file and double-click on KillBox.exe to run it.

In the main screen of Pocket KillBox, go to Tools in the top menu bar, and select: Delete Temp Files.

Back at the main screen of KillBox, select the option: Delete on Reboot

In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\WINNT\System32\open32.exe
Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
When asked if you would like to Reboot, select No.

Finally, in the Full Path of File to Delete, copy and paste the following:
C:\WINNT\System32\winupdate07294943[1].exe
Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
When asked to Reboot, select Yes!!

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Shell] open32.exe
O4 - Startup: winupdate07294943[1].exe
O4 - Global Startup: APC UPS Status.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ?

Empty all Temp files, reboot and post a new log. Also, test IE again.

Two new things. 1st, when I try and restart with killbox, I get an error "PendingFileRename Operations Regisrty Data Has Been Removed By External Process" and it kicks back to the desktop. I'm guessing because I don't have a WINNT folder, possibly WINDOWS\System32? Also, Went to liveupdate Norton, and I get an error and it won't update. Symantec help site lists as worm/trojan breach, and I am manually dloading the newest update. I will run a full norton scan and check in tomorrow. Thx for the help so far.

I'm sorry, I should have reread my post. Change what I put as C:\WINNT\System32 to C:\Windows\System32. I will repost it correctly now.

In the main screen of Pocket KillBox, go to Tools in the top menu bar, and select: Delete Temp Files.

Back at the main screen of KillBox, select the option: Delete on Reboot

In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste this entry:
C:\Windows\System32\open32.exe
Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
When asked if you would like to Reboot, select No.

Finally, in the Full Path of File to Delete, copy and paste the following:
C:\Windows\System32\winupdate07294943[1].exe
Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
When asked to Reboot, select Yes!!

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Shell] open32.exe
O4 - Startup: winupdate07294943[1].exe
O4 - Global Startup: APC UPS Status.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
O4 - Global Startup: hpoddt01.exe.lnk = ?

Empty all Temp files, reboot and post a new log. Also, test IE again.

Here follows a new logfile after following PCguy's instructs. IE still does not work. If you notice, the winupdate... entry is still resident. I did a drive search for the file, and came up with two files. C:\Document and Settings\PC1\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winupdate07294943[1].exe and C:\Windows\prefetch\WINUPDATE07294943[1].EXE-394f7141.pf Norton came up with nothign during the last scan, and symantec help is referencing their liveupdate problem with my IE problem.
