Computer Works In Safe Mode But...

Postby tubaguy63 » Wed Aug 02, 2006 1:16 am

My wife is having major problems with her laptop. She has a Dell Inspiron 8200 running XP Pro SP2, Pentium 4 2 GHz with 512 MB of RAM.

Last week, when she started her computer, the bios looked a bit odd, as did the Windows loading screen with alternating thick vertical bars.

Once Windows loads, one of two things happens:
Windows loads like normal, yet the screen becomes more and more hazy as time goes by with a rainbow haze. The computer maintains normal usage. The rainbow haze also follows rapidly moving objects, such as the mouse cursor or dragged windows.
A white washed out screen with vertical bars slowly transitions into a black or blue screen. When this happens, Windows will not load completely or be accessible ctrl+alt+delete is not accessible either.

There are no problems when I start the computer in safe mode. It acts perfectly normal.

I have tried scanning for a virus and spyware, using Norton Anti-Virus, Spyboy Search and Destroy and AdAware. I have also tried replacing the RAM. Finally, I tried restoring the computer using System Restore. None of these worked.

There is a possibility that this all started after our dogs knocked a small class of water near the laptop. As far as we could tell the water briefly touched the external case of the computer, but I won't rule out water damage.

Recently, the after-market DVD burner started to act strange. It would create feedback with the speakers if the tray was left open. (this happened a couple of times)

My thoughts are water damage, spontaneous bad driver(s) or a really invasive virus.

I have posted a few photos of the problems at a computer help message board:

Thank you in advance!

You do have some spyware but I don't think the monitor problem stems from them.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
winupdates.exe

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1EF6352F-BC68-7393-D203-62550DF27E1B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\qgjumuv.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe

If you cannot delete this file(s)then:
Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now click Delete a file on reboot
Select the file(s) to be deleted on reboot:

Click open but click no to reboot now do the same for each file:

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.
