so, here's what's up. currently, my comp won't go online. i have a comcast cable connection, and it won't connect. in addition to this, avg anti-spyware has a pop up saying there was a mistake and that a log of it was made. also, an email scanner on my computer pops up with a small, blank error message, containing only a red x. i cannot connect through any program, including msn and windows explorer. i have scanned with avg in safe mode, but found nothing. can you please help?

Hello modernsamurai,

You have two anti virus programs installed and running, AVG and Norton this could be part of the problem. Please uninstall on of these programs

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only" put a check next to each of the following entries:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CleanUp] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\200762311170_mcappins.exe /v=3 /cleanup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\2007623111653_mcinfo.exe /insfin

Now click the "Fixed checked" button and then close HijackThis

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\2007623111653_mcinfo.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\200762311170_mcappins.exe

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Restart your computer and post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

modernsamurai,

I will need some information on your setup, are you using a router and what type of connection (dsl cable dialup) ?
Do you connect through a network card, usb or a modem card?

I will also need to know what is going on with your IP and DNS.
Click start select run and type cmd and press enter a command box will appear.
Now type:
Ipconfig /all (note the space between the g and the /) and press enter.

Next type:
ping yahoo.com (note the space between the g and the y) and press enter.

Next type:
ping 66.94.234.13 (note the space between the g and the 6) and press enter.

Now right click inside the command box and select "Mark" now click and hold the left button and drag across all the text in the command box, it will turn white, press enter to copy the selected text.

Paste the copied text into your reply along with the answers to my questions please.

my connection is a comcast cable connection. i use the comcast router to take the connection to a vonage router, which then route my computer, and the one i'm currently using. in my computer is a nvidia ethernet card. do you think it may be the driver? because while i have no connection onlkine, it is showing a connection available, and it responds to whether the cable is unplugged or not.

modernsamurai,

Go to Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event viewer > look in the system section.

You are looking for any red or yellow icons, double click on the icon.
Click inside the 'Description' section then highlight the text and copy and paste it into notepad.
At the bottom of the event window check 'words' and then copy and paste that text also
Then past it all into your reply to this thread.

If you don't show any errors in the event viewer then:
Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery section
Settings button > System Failure section > check the box 'Write an event to the system log'

well, i checked through the task manager and found that there are like, five svchost processes running. i did what you said and checked for the TCP/IP. i found one that said it, though its full name was "TCP/IP netBIOS helper" so i don't know if it is the same one. however, i attempted to restart it, but it didn't change anything. however, i looked down a little and found that the "web client" status was "stopping." i clicked it, and it didn't have the options to stop, start, or restart. hope that helps.

It sounds like the tcp/ip is messed up and may need reinstalling but lets do some more checking first.

Click start and run type cmd and press enter to start the command box.
Now type:
netsh diag gui (note the spacing between the h and d also between the two gs) and press enter.
That will launch the Network Diagnostics first click on Set Scanning Options and check everything.
Now click on Scan your system it will take a minute to finish and then give you a report.

Please post back with the Failed items listed, you might have to click the little + signs next to each item to get the full report for that item
