Hi, this is my first post, i hope you can help,
a few minutes after starting up a yellow triangle appears in the taskbar and pop up box appears with a white on red cross saying that my computer is infected with spyware and to click here to download the latest upto date antispyware:


this is different from this that iv seen before, where the white on red cross is in the taskbar and the yellow triangle in the pop up box, dunno if this makes a difference but i thought id mention it.

i have been deleting, Startup: O4 - system.exe &

because i think their linked to the spyware warnings, but they reappear on next start up.

i keep running avg and ewido anti spyware scans and they find a delete dodgy files but it doesnt fix the problem,

i hope someone can help me sort this out and advise me on what to get rid of cause i dnt know what to do any more!

Hello chris862, and welcome to our forum.

You were going down the right path with the smitfraudfix but there is another step to remove what was found.

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected.
You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.

A reboot will be needed to finish the cleaning process.
The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Please copy/paste the contents of that report into your next reply along with a new hijackthis log.

You are infected with a number of spyware and trojans, we will use two programs to get most of it cleaned up.

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Please download and save it to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFixopens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the
Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.


Please download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 from and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
6. Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning:
1. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
2. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
3. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
4. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
5. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
6. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
7. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan in your reply along with the vundofix log and a new hijackthis log.

done everthing as you instructed exactly,
AVG said that there is no report, it says there was an error reporting under tools-antispy ,i can tell you 32 items are in quarantine,

vundofix says there were no infected files found and so it didnt provide a log,

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Please download to your desktop but do not run it yet.
If you already have the combo fix I still want you to download a clean one, first rename the old combofix.exe to oldcombo.exe and then download the new clean one.


Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, do not run anything in this folder until later.

Reboot into Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please "Save As" that log to your desktop as combo.txt.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running, that may cause it to stall.
Reboot the system into normal mode.

Now open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. The log will be in the l2mfix folder on your desktop you will need to copy the contents of that log in your reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Copy + paste the contents of the combo.txt, the l2mfix log and a new hijackthis log and paste it all into your reply.

did everything as you instructed, combofix rebooted the system into normal mode while it was scanning and then produced a log file, but i rebooted again just to make sure.
My control panel, taskmanager, and desktop background have now all come back, which im well pleased about

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select
Option #2 for Run Fix, by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer.

After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal).
L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

sorry for the delay in reply,
when i clicked fix checked on the'do system scan only' after checking the selected files, it said something about 020- applnit, im not sure if it got rid of it or not,
also when copying an pasting the red part into killbox, it wouldnt do it, so i copied and pasted each one in to the file to kill part,
after checking 'reboot now' 'yes' it said something that they had already been deleted by external process, or something like that, anyway here is my new hi jackthis scan;

Looking better good job on working through your Killbox problem

Your Windows needs to be updated to service pack 2 otherwise you could be reinfected! often within hours!
Please go and update your windows.
(note you must use Internet Explorer to access Microsoft's update)

If you can't download SP2 from Microsoft Update, you can order it on CD from

In that case Microsoft has a security update that will protect you until you can install service pack 2

hi, iv downloaded service pack 2, that ISP number thing isnt me so i got rid of them as you said in hijackthis as well as the other file, which still seems to come up in the new scan i think;

ok done everything as you said, when i clicked the red 'x' icon to delete these files on reboot, it does it then says; 'pendingfilenameoperation- registry data has been removed by external process!' im guessing that means its already gone, so i then rebooted manually,
