Hi Gecko

A friend has some problems with his computer - he believes he has accidentally contracted Spyware.

I only have limited access to his computer, but have managed to gain the following information:-

* Hompage hijacked from Google
* Advertising Popups (Vodafone etc)

I believe he may have run a Spyware-fixing program already, but problems still persist.

The computer is running Vista.

I could not extract the first version of HijackThis [I am not familiar with Vista, but I think it may be because an unzipper is not installed there?], but found a 1.99.exe version so ran that.

As HijackThis began scanning, two error boxes appeared:-

1] 'Access denied to HOSTS file/folder - HJT cannot fix anything in there - C\Windows\Sys32\drivers\etc\hosts'
2] HJT: 'Unexpected error #75 path/file access error - modmarin - check other 1 item'

Haven't got a clue what either of these mean, perhaps you understand what is happening? Anyway the log continued, and is as follows:-

Sorry for not replying sooner I was away on a personal matter.

You are using an outdated version of hijackthis that will not work with Vista!

Please uninstall the old Hijackthis by using Add/Remove programs in your control panel.
Please do this before installing the new version.

Next please download the latest version from the following link:



Once it is downloaded,
1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button, when it is done copy and paste the contents of notepad as a reply to this post.
