hmmm. is that nav version 7 or version 8? i think in version 8 they dropped 98 support, but it's a good thing that the box might have a virus. if you're competent, you could unlpug the drive in the 98 box, plug in into your xp box, and scan it using the xp box.
on a side note, i had heaps of problems with 98-xp pro networking, got rid of 98 and xp both and running 2000pro i have no problems

this is where I sing praise to Mcafee Stinger... it will sting the few viruses that keep you from installing.... once you get norton installed it'll remove any other viruses out there.

You could also try Housecall Antivirus (which is a virus scanner that runs INSIDE of internet explorer)

1. I would love to upgrade the Win98 machine to XP, but for hardware reasons that is not an option right now.

2. I am especially curious about the error messages prior to the indication of a memory virus; I am suspicious that something is messed up in my system that makes the install go bad, and that NAV interprets what it sees as a virus. Note that the scan performed booting from the NAV CD finds nothing (did that twice). [I realize that isn't conclusive, but it makes me want to check out other possibilities.]

3. Does anyone know what any of those other error messages indicate exactly, and what might cause them during a software install?

4. I am not sure off the top of my head what version number of NAV the 2003 edition is, but it is the same one that has been installed and running on the Win98 machine for about six months. I am quite sure it still supports Win98; even the 2004 version continues to support Win98. [They did drop Win95 support at some point, however.]

Have you tried housecall or stinger? Did they find anything?

Here's a note to remember....

Win98 uses the FAT32 file sys
WinXP uses the NTSF file sys

If WinXP is runs along an older OS it must be last in the chain.
As it can read the Fat32,where the older OS's cannot read XP.
So XP must be the last OS to be installed.

That Stinger Program that Teststrips posted is a very good app.
Download it and run it.
When it opens,put a tic in Boot Sectors and Scan All Files
Then click Scan...
If there is something there it will find it.

Windowsupdate isn't just security patches, it's also bug fixes (a lot if you are using the original win98). It may be worth forgetting about NAV for a second & updating windows to see if that hleps
