I don't know the technicalities behind it but an anti-virus scanner would find a virus in any file on your computer so I don't think a .zip file attachment would be any different.
The best and safest thing to do is just to delete anything that is obviously junk... the only .zip files you should trust are the ones you were expecting to receive off a friend etc.
It's best to not let curiosity get the better of you because even if you can open something without being infected by a virus it probably wasn't worth the risk in the first place... some bit of daft junk.
