XP Boots Normally, but Not in Safe Mode

Postby Phalcon51 » Thu Jun 03, 2004 5:25 am

When trying to boot into Safe Mode the furthest I've gotten is the screen with the dialog box stating that you're booting into Safe Mode, then it blanks out and does a warm boot. It doesn't always stop in the same place, but pretty close. There's no problem booting up into Normal Mode however. The only thing I've done recently is to defrag with PerfectDisk 6.0 ( which I've been doing weekly for the past couple of months) and I added a Belkin 5-port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 PCI card and drivers last week. After I installed the drivers I found out that XP with SP1 already supports this board, but I decided against uninstalling the new drivers as everything seems to working ok. My machine is a Micron Millennia AMD Athlon 1Ghz with 512 Mb of RAM

Any ideas?

TIA

Gary

Have you tried booting into some of the other safe modes - safe mode with command prompt, safe mode with network support? Do you have vaguely exotic devices which standard windows drivers may not support (RAID maybe?)

Hi Restek, thanks for the reply.

Yes, I've tried both of those with similar results. I'm not running anything out of the ordinary, and the only things that have changed since the last time I booted up in Safe Mode (a couple of months ago) are the addition of the Belkin USB PCI card and the addition of PerfectDisk as noted above.

I tried again late last night and noticed that on occasion there is a dialog box that I think says something like "There is a problem with..." something or other, but it disappears so fast that I only get a glimpse of it for a short fraction of a second and it only appears maybe one time out of five.

Any idea what happens in a Safe Mode boot-up that doesn't happen in Normal Mode?

Thanks

I just looked at it and it's already unchecked, so apparently the system isn't listening. as it still restarts after failing to load. Is there any other way to accomplish this?

Also, where does the system store the Error Log file? Would that likely give me any useful info to pass on?
