Windows update error

Postby Metso » Sat Jun 26, 2004 6:45 pm

Click icon to launch windows update, loads the microsoft site http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Get the usual message: Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...

Then nothing. No error message no timeout not a thing.

Have use the trouble shoot and re-registered an ocx file & dll files. It also mentions .js association which left me confused.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks

Well there are several causes...let's start with easy ones:

Did you accept the Microsoft Trust Certificate on visiting the Windows Update website?

(The Microsoft Trust Certificate appears when you visit the Update site.
If you accept the first time you visit, then you should never have to again.
If you have been using the Update website prior to this current issue, then
this is unlikely to be the cause of your problems.)

Next we just need to check your Internet Security settings are not set too HIGH.

To do this:

Click Internet Options on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.
On the Security tab, click the Internet zone and make sure the setting is Medium.
Now click the OK button, close Internet Explorer.

(You may like to have a High setting here, but Windows Update will not work.)

In case any of the files in the Temporary Internet Files folder are causing a problem, let's go ahead and delete them.

Click Internet Options on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer.
On the General tab, click the Delete Files button and then click OK in the small window that appears.
Now click the OK button, close Internet Explorer.

Now open Internet Explorer and try the Windows Update site again.

If Windows Update still doesn't work...post the .dll files you re-registered.

Try using the Corporate site

Also if you are using Zone Alarm try disabling this program and opening the Windows Update site again. Be sure to enable your firewall again when you are done.

Thanks for the tips.

Tried all but problem stems from Norton Internet Security. Must be something to do with one of the updates, but don't which one.

Disabled NIS and windows update work fine.

Will contact Norton to find out what's wrong.

Many thanks
