AMD.com lists the maximum operating temps as follows.
Athlon XP with Palomino core max operating temp is 90 degrees Celsius, 194 degrees Fahrenheit
Athlon XP with Thoroughbred core operating at 1733mhz or less is 90 degrees,194 degrees Fahrenheit
Athlon XP with Thoroughbred core operating at 1800mhz or more is 85 degrees, 185 degrees Fahrenheit
So I don’t think that the temperature is your problem
Sometimes you can find the problem by logging the error event.
To set your system to log error events
Open System from the Control Panel. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. Under System Failure, check the box Write an event to the system log
Now when you shutdown and your system hangs and crashes it will write an error event to the log
To view the event viewer click Start, click run, type “ eventvwr.msc /s ” (without the quotes) click OK
The event viewer will display the errors that caused the system failure look in there to see if you can find what is causing the error event and post it back here.

Any other suggestions?
