Desktop icons refresh

Recently I have been observing that occasionally my Win XP redraws all the desktop icons and it takes a few seconds. This happens when a foreground window is closed or minimized and the desktop is to be displayed.
The desktop icons initially look something like unknown file icon and then one by one proper icons are displayed. I sense some hard disk activity during that time and this takes a few seconds. I am a little surprised as earlier this never used to happen & every time desktop would immediately display. I have AMD Athlon 2000, 256 MB RAM.
