i have roadrunner as my internet provider. also internet explorer. i have macafee security center virus scan and privacy service. i have not scanned for spyware and haven't a clue if my windows xp is up to date. thanks brad.

The first thing I'd do is update windows. Start Button / Go up the menu to "Windows Update". Follow the prompts at the site and download all of the Critical Updates for your machine. You won't be able to do all of them at once, since you've never updated, so it will take multiple tries. (Be thankful you have Roadrunner!)
Next, update your McAfee at their Update Site.
Finally, I'd recomend downloading . After installing, click on the SpyBot Update button to check for further updates.
Now read the Tutorial under the "Help" button. Now go ahead and run it.
I would check for Windows Updates every 2-3 weeks, in the future and check for updates for McAfee and SpyBot every week or so.
