How to ? Programs loading on start up...

Postby Junior_co » Sat Jan 15, 2005 11:30 pm

Here is a question for ya...

1st, how does one find out exactly what programs are loading up on start up.

2nd, how does one stop programs from loading up on start up?

I'm sure that some programs have to load up on start up, but I really don't NEED MS office to do so every time...

I know that there is a Start up folder, but I also know that other things that are not in that folder start up.

Also it was always my understanding that these things just made start up take longer, but not really effect the sys speed unless the aplication was being used...

Could someone help me tiny lil brain and clarify this for me

Thanks..... again

Start menu > Run >

type msconfig

Hit 'ok'

Click on the 'startup' tab

There is a list of all the stuff that starts up on boot.... uncheck the box of anything you decide you can do without.

Then 'apply' and 'ok'

When you next boot the computer will ask you to verify that you still want what it now calls a 'selective startup' ... just say ok and that you don't want to see the message again otherwise it will pop on everytime you reboot.

As for which programs you want to on your startup.... just think about them logically... most things that you recognise... like MS office (!) can be started up as and when you need them.... but be careful what you uncheck.. there is some important stuff in there. Google will be your best friend as always :)

There are some programs around that do all the hard work for you... I expect there will be some freeware ones around too. I have only used one... and it was a joke... it kept telling me that stuff on my startup list was a trojan etc.... so I couldn't be bothered with it.

Programs that load on startup DO slow down your computer in some shape or form... I know this because when I open my task manager I can see applications I'm not using.. that loaded up... that are using memory.. so they must do... they are sapping your resources.

re start up

Postby badpolarbear » Sun Jan 16, 2005 12:49 am

If you go to start > run > msconfig > startup and take out check marks the items will still stay in the list. Leave the check marks in everything, install auto runs from here

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freew ... runs.shtml

Open the program and delete the entires that you would take the check marks out of. That way it gets rid of them for good.

In startup the only programs you really want starting on startup are antivirus and antispyware programs.

Here is one I use called Startup I leave it on the desktop

This will show you whats starting up and all you have to do is uncheck it to stop it from starting or add the check mark back if you change your mind

It monitors 3 areas of the registry, the startup menu and the user.

Its better than the msconfig route, that has a nag screen :|

You can also set to manual or disabled some services that you don't need to start up which is quite a performance boost as well.

Go to start-run and type services.msc.

A good website which talks about these services and provides registry patches is located here:
