checking your internet connections

Postby bsxiong » Tue Aug 23, 2005 5:40 pm

hi all,

I want to know how do you check what kind of connects you have for your ISP. Like if it's DSL, CABLE, LAN, T1 and others

I'm just curious becase my computer at work, i was just testing out how fast it downloads becuse i have cable at home and i though it was fast downloading a trial version of flash from macromedia, until i test the speed of download at my workplace. It was downloading at 1.75MB/sec!!! Only takes 49 seconds to download a 99MB flash file. While at my home, it was only downloading at the most 590KB/sec. and takes a little bit over a minuite.

I'm guessing at my workplace, we have T1 or something, but shouldn't it slowed down since everyone is also sharing it with me?

Sounds like a T1 connection at that speed.

A T1 is 1.5MB, so no way you downloaded that fast off of a T1. More then likely they have a DS3 which would be anywhere from 3MB to 45MB.

It must have been either a fast T1 or a slow DS3 then at 1.75 MB.

Even with a DS3 if its in a corportate environment you're bandwidth is going to be shared. They may even be regulating it. I dont think you're going to find out unless you ask the IT managment :P
