Weird security centre alerts

Postby tidalik » Sun Dec 11, 2005 5:46 am

Hi there,

Am currently experiencing recurring security alers telling me that "Virus protection is turned off". These alerts are popping up every half a minute which is p'ing me off no end.

I am running Nortons Antivirus v 10.0.1.13, which is telling me that auto-protection is actually 'on'.

I have gone into Windows Security centre and changed the recommendation for Antivirus so that it is not monitored, but am still getting the same security alerts.

Any ideas?

You might have a trojan or virus--how old is your last virus update?

try updating your Norton with this web page:

Its the Intellegent updater about 8 or 9 meg for file size.

sounds a little like the W32/Sober virus--your vunerable if your updates are 3 weeks old.

What you are describing sound just like a trojan or malware so I would not reinstall Norton yet.

Please download , unzip it to it's own folder.
Start HijackThis and select 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
Now post the contents of the logfile back into this thread

If you do reinstall Norton your current subscription is held in the below file if you did a default install:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveSubscribe\Catalog.LiveSubscribe

If you did not do a default install just do a search for “Catalog.LiveSubscribe” and that will be your current subscription file.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
SCUSAPI.exe

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SCUSAPI] SCUSAPI.exe

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\WINNT\system32\SCUSAPI.exe

If you cannot delet the above file then start HijackThis and click the 'Open the misc tools section' now click Delete a file on reboot
Select the file to be deleted on reboot:

Click open but click no to reboot now and close HijackThis

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Hi Gecko, sorry, been away for the holidays so have been a bit slack.

Have followed your recommendations. I seem to recall that scusapi.exe was installed when the drivers for my sharp 3-1 printer were installed, so don't know if we're barking up the wrong tree. Anyways, here is the new HijackThis log.

Your log looks clean

Two questions:
1. Is your printer still working?
2. Is norton auto-protection on and have the popups stopped?

If you need to reinstall norton your subscription file is located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveSubscribe\Catalog.LiveSubscribe

Hi there,

In response to your last question Gecko.
- We have recently replaced the printer, so that is not an issue anymore.
- Norton's autoprotect is still on. In regard to the pop-ups. They still occur. But not as frequently. It is only occcasionally during the boot sequence of Windows that a pop up will open. Usually about the time that all the background programs are being started.
