Activating Windows

Postby Torquay-Pete » Thu Feb 09, 2006 7:15 am

Hello again
I have encountered a small problem. I recently installed a new Hard Drive for a friend,so far so good, I was trying to install windows fro her from her Original Windows XP disc but found that this was just an Upgrade Disc.To cut a long story short I had to install windows from MY disc to get her up and running again....the problem came when she tried to Activate windows. This wont allow any more activations from the Serial Number supplied?? I suggested using her Number from the Upgrade disc but NO GO!! any ideas out there?? Thanx in advance as usual Pete

Quite a situation. I would first call microsoft and see if they will give you an activation code. On the activation screen, choose telephone a service rep, choose your location and call the 800 number it gives you. You will probably be denied by the automated system but it should tell you to hold for a rep. The reps you get on the phone are usually more understanding than the computer. If they wont give you one, you can still do a clean install using the upgrade disk IF you have a Win98/Me/2000 CD.

Heres some instructions on performing a clean install with an upgrade disk.
