On your XP home, when you boot up, I think that you are blowing by the login screen without a logon name and password. Windows XP and 2000 want a secure login to access network resources. Windows 98 and 95 are network head aches they don't require it.

Create a new user account with a password, log off XP and log in with the new account and password and see if you connect to the server
