Keep yourself spyware free with spybot search & destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/).

For virus protection, I think AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php) is free :)

Another vote for Spybot. This is the first thing I run on anyones system when they bring it to me. Remember to get the updated detections, as the latest are not included with the program.

Remember to immunize inside of Spybot too, this will help keep you spot free.
