File to copy and paste for Windows Reinstallation

About a year ago on this site their was a FAQ about a file that can be saved and then pasted back in so it isn't necessary to re-enter the SN#. I was wondering if anyone remembers what the filename is. I have a customer that lost his XP Home disc and SN#. He now needs a reinstall to a bigger hard drive? If not does anyone know if it is possible to get the SN# from windows for the reinstall using another XP home disc?

What you what to do is image the old drive to the new drive.

If this is a new hard drive then it should have come with a cd for installing the hard drive and for imaging the old drive.
That is where I would look first. If you don't have this cd then go the drive manufacture's web site, they should have a download for their utility programs.

There are a number of other programs that will also do disk imaging like Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image.
Acronis True Image offers a free 15 days trial download that will actually work for 15 days you can get it

I don't know why I didn't thik of this sooner but
If all you need is the key you can use to find the key being used on that system.
