169 address woes

I seem to have a pretty unique problem.

I used to connect to the internet through a router with two computers. Now it's just my PC. When I connect the cable modem to the router I can pull an IP address no problem. But when I connect the cable modem directly to the NIC card I either go directly to a 169 or I flash a 192 for a second and then it goes to a 169.

Because I'm online right now I know the NIC cad, the cables and the modem all work, but I'm wondering why I can only pull an IP address through the router.

I've tried a number of fixes and I was about to do a windows repair, but I discovered that I no longer have my XP boot disk.

I've tried Winsockxpfix and ISPfix. Neither states that I have any problem.

something that often works is rebooting the cable modem without the lan connected. Basicly, unhook the lan cable from the modem, unplug the modems power and wait roughly 10 seconds. Plug the modem power back in and allow enough time for the modem to sync back up and get itself online. Plug the lan back from PC to modem and test your connection.

You may first want to make sure your lan adapter on your pc is set to automatically obtain an IP and dns server address.
