CD/DVD drive not working

Hi, any help with this would be greatly appreciated!
My problem is that my CD/DVD drive isn't working. It just won't read any discs, doesn't do a thing when I put a disc in, no noise or anything; whereas it used to autoplay. When I go to the folder it doesn't show up as there even being a disc in it. I've tried updating drivers but there's no problem there, I did a restore and that doesn't help either.
Any suggestions?

Realize that cd/dvd drives do go bad, it's a fact of life.

With that said, is this also a burnner?
If so have you checked your ASPI layer/driver?

I've always had the best luck with installer.

You need to check and see if the cdrom drive is visible in device manager. Rt click on my computer and select properties then the tab for hardware and then select device manager and see if it shows the drive with a yellow flag. If it does, then you have a registry problem or aspi driver problem.

If the drive is not showing up in device manager, it is either dead, or there is no power to the device.

Hi, yeah I went there and clicked DVD/CD-ROM drives, then it says IDE-DVD DVDRW8801.
Also, when I put a disc in, there's a wee green light comes on just at the drive.

Go to this link and follow the instructions and the registry edit procedure. I used it the other day on a system that wouldn't respond. I didn't remove or reinstall any applications as recommended.

Ghecko mentioned checking your aspi layer which is a good idea. there are 4 dll's that help keep the cdroms running right. I use the Adaptec one. Here is a link to that site These are the most current aspi drivers, I don't recommend using the forceaspi drivers, they are not the most currrent.

Hi, still no joy. I done all that, well all except where it says uninstall your adobe application... cos I didn't know what one to uninstall but thought I'd give the rest of it a go. Nothing worked. Then I done that adaptec thing... haven't a clue what I was doing, it unzipped, I couldn't find it, I done a search for it, found something, installed something but no idea if it was the right thing or if I was meant to.
Anyways, from doing that first part, I now have the CD/DVDkey on the desktop and clicked it to add the info back to the registry, so can I now delete it off the desktop

Does it look as though I'm not going to get the cd/dvd drive working Shall I take it apart and blow some dust around or buy a new puter

With the aspi program, when you run it, it unzips 25 files to c:\adaptec\aspi. If you go to that folder and doubleclick on aspichk.exe, it will check out your system to see if the drivers are up to par. If not, I believe the install.bat will do it for you. The read me file should help you out.

Cdroms do go bad, you might try to switch it out with a known good one. XP will reconize it without having to add drivers.

It says ASPI is installed and fully operational.

I wouldn't have a clue how to change the cdrom. I'd have to buy a new one and get someone to do it for me, so was thinking the cost of all that would prob be much same as a new computer?

What operating system are you using? Is it windows 98 by any chance?

Hi, no it's XP.
All's well though, I found the receipt and I thankfully took out cover for the puter so im gonna ring up and get someone out to fix it!
