Hello harleydav32, and welcome to our forum.

AOL is one of the most invasive programs that you can install, it puts files everywhere.
I would like for you to use a tool to find out what part of AOL is still loading.

Please download HijackThis http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis.zip and save it to your desktop.

To extract HijackThis:

1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

harleydav32,

Open up the log file, now click and hold the left mouse button and highlight all the text.
With the text highlighted press the Ctrl + C keys at the same time (copy)
Now to paste it into a reply here press the Ctrl + V keys at the same time (paste)

harleydav32,

From what I read it looks like the AOL thing might have come from ICQ6.
Anyway, to stop the AOL thing.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on the following:
aolsoftware.exe

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only" put a check next to each of the following entries:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HostManager] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1182456767\ee\AOLSoftware.exe
O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - AOL LLC - C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLAcsd.exe

Now click the "Fixed checked" button and then close HijackThis

That should do it!

Sorry, I understand the second part of you instuctions, but not the first part. Press ctrl/alt/del and end task on aol software exe? Where can this be found? When I do find it do you press all three at a time or one at a time? Can I skip the first part and do the second ?

harleydav32,

You really need to end the program first, otherwise aolsoftware.exe could write the registry calls back into the registry.

On your keyboard press the Ctrl, the Alt and the Delete keys at the same time. (Ctrl, Shift and Esc combination will do the same thing)
Or you can click Start > Run and type taskmgr in the box and click OK

All of these will bring up the Task Manager, make sure you the "Processes" tab is selected.
Scroll down the list of processes until your see aolsoftware.exe select it by clicking on it and then click the End Process button. Close the Processes Manager.

Then proceed with the rest of my instructions.

Followed your instuctions to the letter, 3 times, each time the icon dissapeared, then I restarted the pc each time, and it came back each time.
