Autoplay problems when connecting Archos device via USB

I have an Archos 605 MPEG4/MP3 player, with 160GB HDD.

I usually connect this into a USB port on the pc and the Autoplay dialog box pops up and asks me what I want to do (what I want to open it with). I click on "open folder to view files" (the yellow folder option) and a window opens with the HDD folders visible (Video, MP3, photo, etc etc)

Also, the device used to appear under "My computer" with a drive letter assigned. I could drag/media into relevant folders no problems at all.


However, I think since installing Winamp, the option of "open folder to view files" yellow folder has disappeared when I plug in the device, with only 2 other options remaining.

1 - Take no action
2 - Open with Winamp

Take no action is useless as nothing therefore appears under my computer and it's as though the device is not connected. Hardware manager doesn't show anything under USB devices

Open with Winamp will make the device visible under "portable device" in winamp and I can access the mp3 media.


I've since uninstalled Winamp to see if the "open folder to view files" reappears when plugging in the device, but to now avail. All I have now is "take no action".


I've downloaded and tried Windows "Autofix" but the device doesn't ever show as a drive letter so it is not visible to "fix" anything.

I've also downloaded "Autoplay" repair ver 2.2.2 by Darius Baczynski and the Autoplay manager section has the option of "Open folder to view files" showing in every possible situation, though I think all this program relates to is when you insert disc media, and not USB devices.


I'm a little stumped!

This may seem like a ridiculous thought but have you tried a different USB port? Sometimes doing so will completely reinstall the device, in your case the drive.

Sorry, Yes I should have mentioned. I've tried another USB on the pc and also tried a couple of ports on a connected USB hub too. All gave the same problem

It's ok now - just re-appeared!

I re-installed Media Player 11 (grudgingly) and it offered to recognise and sync the device. The archos became visible under My Computer/Other devices underneath the removable drive letters, alongside the Creative Zen icon.

However, the next time I connected it, I was given the option of "open folder to view files" which is even better as I dont have to use media player now I can drag/drop again.

Result!
