Blue Screen of Death

Having some problems with a friend of mines computer.

I'm not actually sure if she changed anything or did anything prior to this happening.

The computer will boot up almost completely, but then the blue screen pops up. The pc is able to boot in safe mode. While in safe mode, I ran a virus scan and two trojans were found and quarantined. I also ran 'check disk' and no errors were found. I did a system restore and I still have the same blue screen pop up at startup. I checked all the hardware configurations and everything seems to be fine.

What else should I try? I'm stumped

Update:

The blue screen has this information which means absolutely nothing to me.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

At the bottom it says

I have since tried a few more things

I booted with the Dell drivers CD and diagnostics program. It searched and found no problems. I also ran Spybot and Adaware and Memory test program. Spybot and Adaware found quite a few things which I fixed.

After I ran those programs the computer boot completely up. It operated fine for about a minute after starting up and then the blue screen popped up again. I tried restarting and this kept happening again and again.

What should I try now??

Typically this error is due to a bad driver or faulty hardware, but could also be over heating. In you case it's most likely faulty hardware or overheating.

Make sure the cpu fan is working, it could also be the PSU overheating, check that fan as well.
Otherwise it's a process of elimination to find the faulty hardware.

The cpu fan is working properly. I do not think it is overheating.

Yesterday I just though of checking the event log. I found something quite interesting. Right before the pc went down it did a Windows Update. On the System Error Log, just after this update there was a System Error (Category: 102, Type: Error, Error Code 1000000a, and 4 parameters which are listed in the first post) Right after this error, in the Applications Error Log there was an application hang. Apparently Internet Explorer hung up. Hang address: 0x00000000. I'm assuming this was due to the system error.

Could Windows Update have screwed this up? If so, can the update be uninstalled?


I don't know if this info helps any. But I am stumped.

If you ran the Last know Good Configuration before the safe mode, you may get your PC working. Most of time, I correct the similar problem using this method.

IRQ conflict seems cause by the system device/driver conflict, load the last known good configuration will load the previous working profile and correct the conflict.

If you ran the safe mode already before the Last Known, the previous working profile will be erased. So have to do the other completed steps of troubleshoot.

If it boots into safe mode, could be a driver issue. Try rolling back to an earlier restore point. Also may want to test the memory.

Seems the system restore already had been run.

Now, try minimized system hardware boot may work.
