How to make a super quick boot system??

Postby Holchr » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:07 pm

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me with this.
I need to make a super quick boot (any WIN OS, preferably XP) system. I'm talking from PWRBTN to Operational within 10 seconds.
This system is not really going to do anything besides running a single application.
-It doesn't need to use the network
-It doesn't need to print
-It doesn't need to have users
-It doesn't need to have visual themes
-It doesn't need to play games
...and so on
However is has to
-Play audio (any codec, but only one, e.g. mp3)
-Play video (any codec, but only one, e.g. avi)(trough mainboard vga, no graphics card)
-Use mainboard features like e.g. ports(serial, parallel, usb...)

Now, do I go for some kind of stripped version of windows, or do I install a normal version and then strip it down, or anyone has some better idea.

The machine running this system would be more than adequate for the job, e.g. DualCore, DDR2.

The main thought is that it has to boot extremely quickly.
Any help or plain thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

First thing is to have a SSD insted of a hard drive, at least for it to store the boot and OS. That is one thing that is crucial if you want quick boot. As for the other things, i can't really answer because i'm not a huge software guy.

If you want a fast booting machine that only plays audo and video with access to the ports, why not try Ubuntu (using the classic log on). Mine used to put from pushing the power button to browsing google in 15 seconds. And that was just a standard workstation, no special hardware.
