Problems installing XP

Good to hear your getting rid of Windows ME but I strongly encourage you to do a fresh install. Troubles can arise when you upgrade from one O.S. to another. Also make sure you computer is compatible to upgrade to XP. You must meet all the requirements.
Check this link out

You can also try this:

Copy the i386 folder from the Windows XP CD-ROM to the hard disk, and then run Setup manually:
Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
Browse to, and then click, the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Drag the i386 folder from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to drive C.
Click drive C, and then double-click the i386 folder.
Double-click Winnt32.exe, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows XP Home Edition.
If Setup stops again, boot into Safe mode, and then try this procedure again.
Good luck
