"Spot On" PopUp + IE doesn't close + Ctrl N doesn'

Postby crimson » Sun May 09, 2004 2:22 pm

I'm using IE on XP Home. Since yesterday am having the following problems:

1. A search window pops up (Spot On Search) whenever I open a new page
2. Quite often IE window wouldn't close, unless I use Ctrl Alt Delete, and when doing so it gives me the following error message in the windows log:

C:\DOCUME~1\USER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER9.tmp.dir00\IEXPLORE.EXE.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\USER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER9.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

3. Ctrl N doesn't open a new window (so I have to go to File... New... Window to do it)

I ran AdAware, then SpyBot and finally HiJackThis as suggested by brad in this forum when someone had a similar problem. Here's the log of the latter:

Do you have a Program called CASPROG in Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs? If so, remove it.
Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.) Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2D7CB618-CC1C-4126-A7E3-F5B12D3BCF71} - c:\windows\ngpw34.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {63CF97E8-4133-438a-A831-CC9C6D47D673} - c:\Program Files\Reg2\Reg2.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {665ACD90-4541-4836-9FE4-062386BB8F05} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7371F073-AC0F-4b80-BB2F-96A488CEFB32} - c:\Program Files\Xmod\xm320.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {82315A18-6CFB-44a7-BDFD-90E36537C252} - C:\Programmi\QuickSearch\QuickSearchBar1_27.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E9147A0A-A866-4214-B47C-DA821891240F} - c:\windows\ngsw31.dll
O3 - Toolbar: QuickSearch Search Bar - {82315A18-6CFB-44a7-BDFD-90E36537C252} - C:\Programmi\QuickSearch\QuickSearchBar1_27.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)

Now Delete these Foldes/Files: (Bold)
c:\windows\ngpw34.dll
c:\Program Files\Reg2\Reg2.dll
c:\Program Files\Xmod\xm320.dll
C:\Programmi\QuickSearch\QuickSearchBar1_27.dll - Do you have a Folder in C drive named Programmi? If so, delete it. If not, delete the QuickSearch Folder.
c:\windows\ngsw31.dll
You may have to be in Safe Mode to delete some of the above Folders/Files.

Thanx for your reply, brad

No, there is no CASPROG program

I did as you said, and have those fixed by HiJackThis, but when I tried to find the filed you list below (the ones to delete), I found just the Quick Search Folder (empty).

ngpw34.dll and ngsw31.dll files exist but under C:\Documents and Settings\User\Documents , should I delete them anyway?

Finally I didn't find Reg2.dll and xm320.dll files anyware on my computer, the Reg2 and Xmod folders exist, but not those files. Is it good, bad?

Delete them. Do you have "Show Hidden Files" selected in Tools / Options?

No, "show hidden files" wasn't selected, but even selecting it the reg2.dll and xm320.dll files can't be found.

In any case, I deleted the ones i found... and it seems to work just fine now.

Thanx again, Brad

Did that too... but still it shows these files do not exist. By the way running HiJack This again, and looking at the log, the lines that contained the reference to those files are gone just as well.
