Explorer won't load new twist with this one help

Postby gbghouse3 » Fri Sep 21, 2007 12:38 am

My Desktop does not load at startup.
Only the wallpaper and mouse are on desktop after startup. I can't load explorer.exe by running a new task through task manager, the file still exists in the windows dir But when i try to run it it doesn't work . I have run scans with avg, and Adaware. What could possibly be keeping the program from loading at startup?
Any thoughts on this issue would be greatly appreciated..

Hello gbghouse3, and welcome to our forums

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 from and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
6. Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only" put a check next to each of the following entries:
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: CIEObjectObj Object - {CA13D72F-2DAC-4D99-B08D-C5EA1C920E89} - C:\WINDOWS\IECodecPlg.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredi ... xdm021YYUS
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/nocach ... tialSetup1 .0.0.15-3.cab

Now click the "Fixed checked" button and then close HijackThis

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:
My Web search or my search

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following File

C:\WINDOWS\IECodecPlg.dll

If you cannot delete these file(s)then:

gbghouse3,

Some of the newer spyware is Hijackthis wise and can hide from Hijackthis.

Please rename Hijackthis.exe to HJT.exe and then generate a new HJT log

Still nothing showing up :(

I suggest that you download extract it to your root like this:
C:\rkr\RootkitRevealer.exe

Close all other programs, windows and disable your screen saver before you start RootkitRevealer.
While RootkitRevealer is running, you shouldn't do anything at all with the PC.
Put down the mouse, back away slowly, and let the program do its work.

Start RootkitRevealer.exe and press the Scan button.
It will take some time to finish an hour is common so just wait it out.
Once the scanning is finished RootkitRevealer will create a log, please copy the contents of that log into your reply.

gbghouse3,

No rootkit that's for sure:)

Please download to your desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running, that may cause it to stall.

Next goto Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event viewer > look in the system section.

You are looking for any red icons, double click on the icon.
Click inside the 'Description' section then highlight the text and copy and paste it into notepad.
At the bottom of the event window check 'words' and then copy and paste that text also
Then paste it all into your reply to this thread.

If you don't show any errors in the event viewer then:
Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery section
Settings button > System Failure section > check the box 'Write an event to the system log'

In your next reply should be the combofix log and what you may have found in the event log.

gbghouse3,

Combofix helped this program: C:\Program Files\Windows Live Safety Center
Is a rouge program that can cause exactly what you're going through.

Please download
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool";
it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes.
Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

----------------
----------------
>Setp two>
-----------------
-----------------
Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected.
You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.

A reboot will be needed to finish the cleaning process.
The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Please copy/paste the contents of that report into your next reply.

gbghouse3,

I'm sorry you lost your desktop image.
That does bring up one question, when you are in safe mode does Explorer.exe work?

If so then boot into safe mode and you should be able to restore you wallpaper.

Let's see if we can see anything that may be loading on startup that would stop Explorer:

Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section
Now put a check next to "List also minor sections (full)"
Now click the "generate StartupList log" notpad will open the log
Copy & Paste the contents of this log into your next reply
