limited or no connectivity turned into enabling modem crash

Postby batrico » Fri Nov 23, 2007 2:16 am

HI i have posted on this forum once before but since im on a laptop instead of my pc i had to reregister as i couldnt remember my old username.but enough about that thats beside the point.
My pc is a intel 2.26 celeron with xp pro and 512 mb of ram.
up till recently my broadband was ok until couple of days ago i got limited or no connectivity.i repaired it in network connections but it had trouble aquiring a network address. i disabled it then enabled the connection and still the same.i reset the modem a couple of times but still the same.then it got worse if i enable the network connection the pc freezes and winlogon.exe takes up 98percent resources and i can do nothing as pc is frozen.
if i leave the net disabled the pc works fine with no abnormalities.Ive virus checked - found trojan but that was cleaned and still problem so that wasnt it.I used a number of antispare progs to search for spyware but found nothing major that could be causing it.

I am currently using my same cable modem with this laptop so thats not the problem either.

Id appreciate any help i can get here as ive been scouring the net on my own looking for answers for days.Feel free to ask for any other info you need to solve my problem.

regards

Hello batrico, and welcome to our forum.

It sound to me like you have some spyware/malware hooked to winlogon.exe.

Please download HijackThis http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis.zip and save it to your desktop.

To extract HijackThis:

1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

Hello batrico,

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only" put a check next to each of the following entries:
F3 - REG:win.ini: load=
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=
O2 - BHO: SpywareBlock Class - {0A87E45F-537A-40B4-B812-E2544C21A09F} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: monln - C:\WINDOWS\

Now click the "Fixed checked" button and then close HijackThis

Next download extract it to your root like this:
C:\rkr\RootkitRevealer.exe

Close all other programs, windows and disable your screen saver before you start RootkitRevealer.
While RootkitRevealer is running, you shouldn't do anything at all with the PC.
Put down the mouse, back away slowly, and let the program do its work.

Start RootkitRevealer.exe and press the Scan button.
It will take some time to finish an hour is common so just wait it out.
Once the scanning is finished RootkitRevealer will create a log, please copy the contents of that log into your reply.

batrico,

Good you do not have a rootkit.

So how is it running now can you connect to the internet?

If not please post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Batrico,

I have one question about your log, is this your I.S.P.?
http://www.upc.ie/
NTL Communications (Ireland) Limited
UPC Broadband Internet Services

Otherwise I really don't see anything bad in your log.

Please download to your desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running, that may cause it to stall.

Combofix will help me see if there is anything else that could be causing a connection issue.

When you connect the modem and it connects I want you to click on Start > Run and type:
cmd and press enter a command box will come up, inside this box type:
ping 209.191.93.52 and press enter (note the space between the g and the 2)

When it finishes right click inside the command box and select "Mark"
Now click and drag your mouse over the results text (it turns white) and press enter.
Now paste this into notepad (Ctrl + v) and then into your reply.

Back on the laptop. The joy didnt last long. Was putting avg av and scanning with it when i noticed no net connection.then i tried to disable/enable no connection and winlogon.exe at 98 percent freezing my pc.The spyware must have reloaded on my pc.
Ill post a hijackthis log tomorrow as im to tired to do it now and dont have a flash drive here atm.

My connection seems not to be the problem so at least we know that its whats causing the winlogon error thats the problem.
Later
