Try removing your USB 2 Card.

I am having the exact same problem on my laptop (which unfortunately makes hardware fiddling quite difficult).

Over the weekend I applied a new XP home auto-update with no problems including an enforced restart.

Yesterday was the first full boot of the laptop after the update. There appeared to be problems with the shutdown process - a couple of processes had to be closed down.

This morning the laptop will not boot up: standard or last good boots simply end up with the WinXP logo and the little processing bar going mad; safe mode boots get to btkrnl.sys and stop. In both cases the disk access light is on full-time.

One thing that is noticeable is how slow everything is - almost looks like a problem in disk access.

Stevegill... In the future, please start a new Topic for best results.
Do you have any hardware connected to the Laptop? If so, try removing it and booting.
Have you tried booting with your WinXp disk?

Apologies - simply used this existing topic as it seemed to match.

I have managed to get it restarted using the XP disk and one of the safe mode options (disk logging?). The only odd message I got was one indicating the file system type couldn't be determined.

The 'windows has detected a problem' bit then kicked in and downloaded another couple of updates.

Removing hardware had had no beneficial effect previously.

I looked up your board on asus homepage. It seems that your system comes with a Wi-Fi slot for a card to be put in--you might want to disable that feature in the bios.

There was a new bios flash that came out this month--several updates to the promise ide raid none recent.

Plus I noticed that it needs the VIA 4 and 1 chip set drivers installed--they're easy to overlook.

from what I gather, a regular xp install only involves 1 hardrive and then you run the raid configuration onto the os then you are set to add drives.

On your next install, leave the nic out. put it in after you finish

Make real sure that if there is an onboard nic device that it is not first in the boot order.

One other thing parity ram takes about 5 minutes to boot set the ram to ecc scrub in the bios. I'm not kidding about the 5 minutes one very long black screen

Good Luck

Hy all,

I had the same problem, and I did a CHKDSK command on selfmode (command line), it found more than one error on my HD. Since this time, I had access to my HD, before that I connot, because a lot of error occured.

I reboot my computer, and windows restart normaly.

After reboot, I serched the " btkrnl.sys " file, located on c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers.

I'm looking for the "msconfig" at startup, and del all bluetooth software on startup.

Thks for your help.
