Most computers I work on you need to press the Delete key to enter the bios. F8 key is too boot in safe mode. I think he should read his manual to find out which key he is to press.

Also, go to www.bootdisk.com and download a boot disk. Boot to it and do a fdisk /mbr That will remake your master boot record. No harm to your PC what so ever.

And do as Restek said, reseat all hardware. Also, try booting with most hardware removed. Just bare minimum.

I didn't fully read all the posts, but if you have a laptop, some of what you describe could be from using the hibernate option. If so, disable it.
