is there a free virus protection software, that is just sa good as say Symantec or McAfee? This would be for a laptop running XP home and would be used by someone who would need it to be a tranparent as possible.

Try Alwil Avast Home 4. It has worked great for me and is free. If you can't find on a search look on PCWorld's website
