the reason for installing the above forementioned programs is a nasty little thing called spyware. Some spyware installs itself without ever asking then keeps track of what websites you go to, and reports it to advertizing agencies, so they can send you ads specifficaly directed towards you.
Spyware also gets bundled with valid programs and is automatically installed when say with the Kazaa file sharing program is installed.
The news gets worse when you look at the quality of these spyware programs. Most are huge memory hogs, and crash quite often, but they keep getting run b/c they were designed to be hard to remove manually.
Most don't have un-install programs
The good news is there are many freeware programs that can detect and delete spyware. "Adaware" and "Spybot - search and destroy" seem to be the most popular programs.
Cwshredder is pointed at CoolWebSearch (aka CoolWwwSearch, YouFindAll, White-Pages.ws and a dozen other names), which is a VERY nasty spyware program that does things such as not allow you to download or run spyware programs
HiJack This is a program that simply searches for programs that run at boot time, and checks for browser plug-ins. The results this program gives you are generally just informative. Most of the programs it will come up with are valid programs that you actually want running. You'll have to go through the results and tell the program to delete unwanted programs. If you can't figure out what some of the programs are, don't just delete them.. reasearch them and/or post them here so we can let you know what the program does. I generally will just type the program name into google which gets a decent answer pretty quickly.
